It's been a mixed bag of weather this week, but we took full advantage of Wednesday's sunshine and warmth!
We went for a mindful nature walk behind our school and these always bring us such peace, presence, and joy :) Check out the images below, don't our smiles say it all, yay!
Selfie time ;)
Grateful! Thankful! Appreciate!
Living. Loving. Laughing.
INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PINK:
Did you know that the second Wednesday in April is the International Day of Pink?
I believe EQUITY, DIVERSITY, and INCLUSION (DE&I)is very important to teach our children on an ongoing basis because it fosters creativity, fresh perspectives, and understanding.
By implementing DE&I, people of different races, abilities, ages, genders, religion, sexual orientation, and other diverse backgrounds can be made more comfortable, at ease, and peace.
Here at Nottawa, our class family has made it our mission to create a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and happy to BE WHO THEY ARE :)
To us, LOVE IS ACCEPTANCE.
Thank you to all the staff & students who wore PINK on Wednesday to show our solidarity and support in creating a more equitable, inclusive, and diverse world!
Yes my friends, we wear pink to stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in the continued fight for equality and acceptance.
This made my day! Everyone supporting equity, diversity & inclusion!
In order to help your child(ren), I urge you to please consider starting and/or continuing your conversations at home about acceptance.
WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE through our own INCLUSIVE thoughts, words, and actions!!
That's right, as a community, we can accept and support our children for whomever they are and however they wish to express themselves.
To all the children in our lives - YOU ARE SEEN, HEARD, and VALUED!
WRITING:
After having many class discussions about the importance of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, students completed the following activity: Write about how we can create a school where everyone feels safe to be who they are. Include details of strategies you would use.
Upon reading and receiving many entries, I was so touched by the responses because your child put their entire heart into it. I have every confidence that with our collective thoughts, words, and actions we can help continue making Nottawa the brightest and best place to be :-)
In the next while, these writing pieces will come home in the agenda for you to admire. When they do, please take the time to celebrate your child's message. I know you will be proud just as much (if not more) as I am!
NOVEL STUDY #2:
I am so excited to share that we have started our second novel study called A Stranger at Home about the moving memoirof anInuit girlwho emerges from a residential school with herRESILIENTandCOURAGEOUSspirit.
This book links directly with our Social Studies learning about 'Early Societies.'
We will read and respond to each chapter to show and share the following comprehension skills: - Making Predictions - Inferring - Visualizing - Summarizing - Questioning - Making Connections
The expectation is that students complete the questions on Google Classroom by the specified due dates discussed in class.
Everyone is asked to be RESPONSIBLE, WORK HARD, and FOLLOW THROUGH on their COMMITMENTS.
These reading responses are meant to help prepare the children with important reading/writing skills for grade 4 and as they move forward in their educational journey at Nottawa (and beyond) :)
Way to go Grace! Notetaking as I read Chapter 1 to the class. Keep up the hard work :)
If your child requires an extension, I understand :) The expectation is that they directly communicate with me verbally and/or email me using their school account.
Looking forward to reading the responses and for us all to continue MOVING FORWARD IN THE SPIRIT OF RECONCILIATION & RESPECT with our Indigenous brothers and sisters :)
MATH:
We are soon wrapping up our Location & Movement Unit. Students have gained a greater understanding of Translations & Reflections.
This week, we took some time to consolidate our thinking with reflections. Below are a collection of photos of some of the questions we did as a whole class. Ask your child about this and to explain the movements of the shapes :)
Way to go Sophie!
Our next unit will focus on Coding! Looking forward to it :)

MINDFULNESS:
The International Day of Pink is a worldwide anti-bullying and anti-homophobia event held annually during the second week of April.
Though similar to Pink Shirt Day in that it also seeks to end all bullying, the Day of Pink is more specifically aimed towards anti-LGBTQ+2 bullying.
I hope this video below helps you further appreciate and value the importance of what love looks like, sounds like, and feels like.
Together, we can help further our society to be more and more understanding and inclusive to all no matter their races, abilities, ages, genders, religion, sexual orientation, and other diverse backgrounds.
DAY OF PINK 2024 THEME:
I'm thrilled to reveal this year's theme: Visibility.
For this year’s theme marks the anniversaries of three incredible milestones: the birth of the Trans flag, the Brunswick Four, and the moment when homosexuality was rightfully removed from the DSM's list of mental illnesses.
On April 10th, 2024, let's celebrate visibility in all its forms - being seen, acknowledged, respected, and listened to. It's about standing tall and embracing our true selves because there is nothing more beautiful than being who you truly are.
Every Day of Pink, our pledge stands strong: to stand against discrimination and bullying towards the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, fostering a world that treasures acceptance.
Let's stand united against injustices, raising our voices for those who need them most.
GROWTH MINDSET:
Thank you Kieran for this week's mindset message!
"Mistakes are proof that you are TRYING." ~ Kieran
It is part of life to stumble (make mistakes) from time to time as we try to reach for our goals. It is how we overcome and rise from our challenges that count!
As the quote says, “mistakes are proof that you are trying.” They are also ways of how we can IMPROVE/BETTER ourselves. Just as in any business venture, entrepreneurs experience up's and down's before they even become successful.
So don't ever limit yourself, take a leap, have faith, and put your best foot (effort) forward in all that you do :)
Dear Families, What a meaningful week we've had yet again! Lots of important and key learning about equity, inclusion, and diversity ! All topics near and dear to my heart :) My students are taking such a heartfelt interest in the issues surrounding Anti-Bullying and Black History . We are learning to apply compassion, understanding and ACCEPTANCE towards one another each and every day. In our classroom, it is our goal to continue ensuring that everyone we meet and greet feels SAFE , INCLUDED , VALUED , and ACCEPTED regardless of differences. You will have noticed by now that from time to time that your child comes home to share that he/she has either written or received a 'bucket filling' note for/from a peer. Thank you Cara for your note of appreciation today :) It is important to me to provide the children with daily opportunities to ex...
Dear Families, Is it really the final days of March?! I hope you've enjoyed the warmer temps we've had this week. It's definitely welcomed and has put a smile on all the children's (and mine) faces as they run, jump, and PLAY during recesses :) I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy, and safe Easter long weekend with your family! As many are aware, it is Good Friday (no school) and Easter Monday (no school), so students will be back to school on Tuesday! I look forward to reuniting with my students and hearing about all the wonderful experiences they got up to with beloved family and friends for Easter :) BUSINESS FAIR: Thank you to all the staff, students, and parents for supporting this year's Grade 8 Business Fair . I am extremely proud of the grade 8's, most of whom I taught when they were in grade 3 (2018/2019). Current grade 8's in my 2019 grade 3 class :)...
