Week #27: March 25th - March 28th

Dear Families,

Is it really the final days of March?!  I hope you've enjoyed the warmer temps we've had this week.  It's definitely welcomed and has put a smile on all the children's (and mine) faces as they run, jump, and PLAY during recesses :)

I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy, and safe Easter long weekend with your family!

As many are aware, it is Good Friday (no school) and Easter Monday (no school), so students will be back to school on Tuesday!

I look forward to reuniting with my students and hearing about all the wonderful experiences they got up to with beloved family and friends for Easter :)

BUSINESS FAIR:
Thank you to all the staff, students, and parents for supporting this year's Grade 8 Business Fair.

I am extremely proud of the grade 8's, most of whom I taught when they were in grade 3 (2018/2019).

Current grade 8's in my 2019 grade 3 class :)  Cuuuuuute!

The creativity, collaboration, and camaraderie in the business endeavours was inspiring!  Our gym looked fantastic with all the business ideas!  Anyone that attended was in awe :)

The Fair was a tremendous success!  These funds will be so helpful for the grade 8's Toronto trip coming up later in the spring.  Way to go Nighthawks!

As a class family, we enjoyed our experience and are now inspired to build our own entrepreneurial ideas!

Below are some photos of the kids and their purchases :)

Thank you for the gift, Grace!

CHARACTER TRAIT:
For our class family, April's character attribute will focus on "Optimism" - We believe we can DO IT!

I believe in the power of optimism. But does positive thinking really have any power? Check out the video to see for yourself. #ThisIsOptimism

I encourage you to harness the power of optimism with your own life! Being in a state of optimism is remarkable!

So come one, COME ALL, JOIN US in the POWER OF OPTIMISM!  It can change your life for the BETTER ... FOR GOOD!

Please Note:  Our next character recognition assembly will take place on Tuesday April 2nd at 12:00PM.

As always, all families are welcome to attend!  I will be sure to recognize our recipients on my next blog update.  Stay tuned!

MATH:
This week, we worked on translating shapes on a grid.  Ask your child:  What is a translation?

In math, a translation moves a shape left, right, up, or down but does not turn.  The translated shapes (or the image) appear to be the same size, same shape as the original shape, indicating that they are congruent.  They've simply shifted in one or more directions.

We watched the video below and it helped solidify this skill :)

Here are the sheets I had students work on, click the image to enlarge and have your child describe and answer the questions orally with you :)  Ask:  What are the coordinates of the grey polygons?

Check us out below in math action describing and creating translations with our think, pair, share buddies!

Working collaboratively is an important skill to build upon our knowledge/understanding, thinking, and application skills :)

SOCIAL STUDIES:
I'm excited!  We have started a new unit in science which focuses on Political & Physical Regions of Canada.  I have posted the slide deck on Google Classroom for students & families to refer to.  Please check it out!

The slides are interactive so students can complete specific questions as I teach the unit at home and at school.  Please encourage your child to do so when I assign these.  It will be indicated verbally in class and in the agenda.

Using work periods wisely is crucial, always be ATTENTIVE & ACCOUNTABLE boys and girls so you get your jobs done on time & with care!  Thank you.

Check out this catchy tune to help us learn the capital cities for each province & territory.
The kids enjoyed this very much ;)

After listening to the tune, I encourage the children to practice memorizing the names of the Political Regions and their capitals.  After all, PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS!

MIELLE:
Congratulations to our very own Mielle on receiving the abbyaward.com for her ski club!  Click the link to learn more about this inspiring athlete Abrielle “Abby” Wunsch.

Way to go, Mielle!

Check out the inspiring video below of one remarkable young girl who always had a smile on her face and always gave 110% in everything she set her mind to :)  I'm in awe!

This award is dedicated yearly to a U10 athlete who displays outstanding sportsmanship, shows up with a smile on their face everyday, never complains, and gives 110% to their coaches and teammates throughout the entire season.

Proud of you, Mielle!

For me, this is an extraordinary achievement, Mielle!  Displaying true character on and off the ski hill always!

I am SO PROUD OF YOU, but am not surprised by this recognition.  It speaks volumes to what I have observed in your thoughts, words, and actions throughout your grade 3 & 4 years with me :)

You are an INSPIRER and I'm SO HAPPY you received this award, well deserved kiddo!

Comradery at its finest - a spirit of friendship and community!

HAZEL:
Congratulations to Hazel who participated in the U10 Division 2 O.B.A. Provincials in Niagara Falls last weekend.  As you can see, her team won the Gold Medal, amazing!

How sweet it is!

When Hazel shared about her big win, Margot asked, "What was the most challenging and exciting part of your tournament?"

To which Hazel replied, "The most challenging was trying to stop the baskets from going in and the most fun was being with my teammates.  We had so much fun together!"

Comradery yet again - a spirit of friendship and community!

Below is an image of Hazel's whole team and coaches.  Aren't they so beautiful?  Brynn, Kaia, Charlotte, and Avery are also pictured, they all attend Nottawa as well.

Wowie, our school community sure has numerous amazing athletes!  I've noticed from some that they get their athleticism from their parents who I played with/against in high school ;)

FUN FACT:  Coach Jay (picture:  to the right) was my OBA coach when I played as a youngster ;)  His volunteering, aptitude for the game of basketball, and gentleness is admirable.

FUN FACT:  Coach Don (picture:  to the left) is Mrs. Newman's younger brother and we share the same birthday ;)  He's a wonderful principal, volunteer, and his love for the game is tremendous.

Gold! 🥇 #provincials 2024! @cwoodblazers U10 girls!

HARLOW:
More athletic achievements to honour, I looooooooove it!  Harlow is part of cheer core and her team had an event last weekend as well :)

The Jungle Cats performed beautifully and displayed such agility, finesse, and sportspersonship throughout their season.  They should be so proud of their efforts :)

Check out our Harlow below poised, confident, and calm during her routines.  Way to go!!

MICHAEL:
Congratulations to Michael and his teammates on being consolation champs for their hockey league.

YAY, you ARE awesome!

What an achievement and what's more is that our very own Michael got the Golden Jersey for player of the game!

In my eyes and heart, it's not only this athleticism that counted, but his cooperative deameanour and listening to his coaches feedback helped him achieve this noteworthy recognition.  Way to go!

ELLE:
Thank you Elle and family for collecting so many tabs for kids!  This has really helped us reach the 1/4 full mark in our jug.

I appreciate your contributions and thinking about the feeling's of kids in need of accessibility supports :)  Keep being thoughtful YOU, Elle!

MINDFULNESS:
What does Easter mean to you?  In class, we regularly emphasize the importance of family and valuing their energy and effort that goes into nurturing us each and every day.

For us, the greatest gift on any special holiday or celebration is to spend quality time with family and offer our sincere gratitude.

My wish for you this Easter is spending quality time with your family and BEING GRATEFUL for what you have ... healthhappiness, and a home to create special memories with loved ones.

I look forward to reuniting with my students on Tuesday to listen and hear about some of their experiences with you :)

GROWTH MINDSET:
Thank you Margot for this week's mindset message, it's so meaningful!

I strongly believe most things are POSSIBLE if you set your mind to it and work hard.  Remaining POSITIVE, PATIENT, and OPTIMISTIC in yourself and others is the key to achieving your dreams :-)

So NEVER GIVE UP on yourself because, with a little faith and a lot of hard work, it's POSSIBLE, the word itself says that impossible (I'm Possible).

So please boys and girls, let go of any negativity or fixed mindset and move forward in a direction that's a right fit for YOU!  #yougotthis

With Love, Grace, and Gratitude,
Ms. Gill
